Carotid Sinus Massage (CSM) and Valsalva manoeuvre (VM) in the acute settings
Antonio Maria Valsalva (1666-1723), Italian anatomist
Introduction
Welcome to the e-learning package on vagal manoeuvres for the management of supraventricular tachycardias (SVT).
This teaching sessions has been approved by the Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom for
1 category 1 (external) CPD credit(s). It will be evaluated by a pre video and post video short test
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this session you should be able to:
- Correctly identify supraventricular tachycardia (AV nodal re-entry tachycardia) from among a series of electrocardiograms
- Identify the indications for, and contraindications to, carotid sinus massage and the Valsalva manoeuvre in the management of supraventricular tachycardia
- Identify the correct anatomical position to perform carotid sinus massage and appropriate technique (including duration of application) for carotid sinus massage and the Valsalva manoeuvre.
- Understand the basic physiological principles underlying carotid sinus massage and the Valsalva manoeuvre
Additionally you will be reminded of the suggested pharmacological and electrical treatments for the management of supraventricular tachycardia, in line with the Resuscitation Council (UK) recommendations.
